New News About a Claver Unit on a College Campus!

Clavers,

The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. is proud of the long relationship we have with Xavier University of Louisiana.  Both institutions were founded only years apart.  Most recently, our Noble Order donated over $300,000 to Xavier University for the Saint Katherine Drexel Chapel, and annually we fund scholarships for deserving graduating seniors.

Recently, some questions have emerged on Social Media concerning our strategy to establish a Collegiate Unit at Xavier University.  While Social Media is not the approved medium to discuss the business of our Noble Order, we are issuing this communication with the intent of addressing many of the questions raised in various forums.

In the 2016 National Convention, The National Council approved the recommendation to establish Collegiate Units at Xavier University of Louisiana, Texas Southern University, University of Las Vegas, along with Clark, Morehouse and Spelman.  The Emerging Leaders worked tirelessly on this project and gave an update again in the 2017 National Convention in Dallas, TX.  The National Council approved the 2017 report of the Emerging Leaders on the Collegiate Units.

In October 2017, I, along with the Emerging Leader Chair and National Office staff, met with key personnel for Xavier University - requesting approval to establish a collegiate unit at Xavier.  As highlighted in my Winter 2017 Claverite report, several meetings and outreach efforts on campus were held leading to this effort becoming a reality in January of 2018.  I have attached a link capturing many of the joyous events.

Thus far, we have initiated five (5) women and nine (9) men into the Order.  When we reach the requisite number, we will petition the National Board of Directors to accept Xavier as an operational unit. At such time, an official unit name and number will be assigned.  Until then, we will continue to recruit and build on what we have.  Much work remains in developing rules and guidelines that comply with both the Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. and Xavier University policies.

I am certain you will join me and Supreme Lady Kenion in acknowledging the need to initiate young, energetic members into our organization to ensure our continued existence and fulfill our future objectives.  Junior members transferring to the senior division has consistently been a top priority, but we must increase our opportunities and broaden the path to recruit youthful members.  Our Collegiate program is a viable initiative to achieve this goal.

I pray we remain steadfast in our commitment to attracting and developing individuals that can potentially serve as future leaders of our organization, thus helping to light the way for our next 108 years!
Warmest Regards,

James K. Ellis
Supreme Knight
